This question is one of the most common in the outdoor industry. Thousands of tent models like in americantent.com are being offered in all stores, including supermarkets. Before opening your order, open your eyes to the items every stall should have.
Integral roof: every tent must contain the room plus the roof. These parts are different, and the room is usually made of lightweight fabric like a mosquito net, containing a waterproof floor, preferably in woven nylon. The over-roof must cover the entire room of the tent, end to end, from the floor from one side to the other, including the sides. This set will allow you to create a kind of air chamber around your room, making the inside of the tent an environment with controlled temperature and humidity about the outside of the tent.
Waterproof roofing: you must observe this point when choosing your tent such as 20×20 pole tent. Ask the manufacturer or seller how many millimeters of the water column the equipment you are looking at has. Trying to explain it, imagine a box 1m wide x 1m deep, and the bottom of this box would be the fabric of the tent. The rain is falling, and the accumulated (vertically) water will be the millimeters it supports; in this case, adding the height value, we go from m² to m³. Ideally, tents should have at least 2500mm of the water column.
To summarize the previous example, it would be like each square meter of fabric on the roof would support 2.5 m of water height. This may seem like a lot, but remember that2500mm is the minimum for a waterproof tent. More technical shelters should have 5000mm or more of waterproofing columns.
Aluminum or fiberglass poles: these poles are the pillars of any tent. Note the finish if the desired model is with fiberglass rods, as they can easily crack or even break with a light tap. The ideal thing is that your tent has aluminum poles that basically do not spoil and provide more lightness and robustness. Pay attention to this, and when assembling the poles, even before adding them to the tent, leave them standing up against a tree, so you don’t risk stepping on them and causing breakage. When disassembling the tent, be careful with the elastics that keep the poles together because when you release one part from another, the elastic can retract with force, causing two ends to collide with force, causing longitudinal cracking in the equipment.
