From Standard Times Press News Paper ENTERTAINMENT This Easter Freetown sees the return of Sierra Leone’s annual Tangains Cultural Festival, which takes place in Funkia Village, Goderich on Easter weekend from 20-24 March 2008.
The Tangains Festival was first staged in Freetown by popular drama group, the Freetong Players, in 1994 and has since become Sierra Leone’s only annual culture festival. The five-day event promises to keep up to its motto ‘know usai yu komot’ (know where you have come from), by enticing festival-goers with a host of exciting events and exhibitions, proudly showcasing country’s cultural heritage.
The festival promises to delight the public with a series of lively shows; from Sierra Leonean traditional dancing and live bands, to masked and dramas performances. Fashion shows, canoe races, kite flying competitions, football galas and a range of other games and sporting events will take place over the five days for the public’s entertainment.
A diverse trade fair promoting and selling Sierra Leonean food, beverages and produce will be open for the duration of the festival. Colourful exhibitions of arts, crafts, artifacts, photos and judas will be displayed to see and buy.
A special children’s entertainment area will keep the little ones amused with shows put on throughout the festival, at venues such as Ocean View Compound and Blue Gate.
According to the Tangains Festival Director, Charlie Haffner, the event promises not to disappoint; “This year we have moved the festival from the concrete city of Freetown to the natural seaside resort-to-be of Goderich village. We hope that Sierra Leoneans and foreigners alike come to support this cultural event, and experience Salone heritage and ethnicity at its best.”
Entrance to the Tangains Festival is only 1,000 Leones. The proceeds raised will be put towards community development projects in the Goderich area.
