POLITICS

“You are only as good as your last act” is an extremely poignant Hollywood statement that is used to remind actors and actresses not to rest on their laurels.  It is meant not only to inspire them to work harder but to remind them about the potential costs associated with complacency, lethargy, arrogance and overconfidence. It appears to work not only in Hollywood but, also in other

The rejection of national honour for his contribution to the growth of Ghana’s security by Kojo Tsikata, fondly called Kojo-T, a retired military captain and former National Security Adviser in both the military and civilian regimes of Jerry Rawlings’ Provisional National Defence Congress (PNDC) and National Democratic Congress (NDC), reveals the struggles of Ghana’s nascent democracy.

Seven Months in Detention Without Trial....Money, Politics Land Innocent Farmer in Jail

42- year- old Abdul Karim Kargbo
a farmer and businessman of Rokel village in the TMS chiefdom Port Loko district, is currently languishing at the Makeni Prison as he was wrongfully accused of committing the offence of murder. Despite there are no substantial and circumstantial evidences to prove the guilt of Karim, he has spent over six months in detention without trial. The allegation levied against Abdul Karim Kargbo is that he murdered Edward Kargbo alias Edie-Boy and Alimamy Kargbo all of Konikay village in the same chiefdom sometime in December 2007. Police investigation has clearly exonerated Abdul Karim Kargbo, but those who hate his guts and want to see him perish are busy using their political connections and money to constantly keep him in detention at the Makeni Prison

President Ernest Bai Koroma today launched the local council elections campaign for his All People’s Congress party. Welcomed by mammoths crowds never before seen in his hometown of Makeni, the headquarters of the northern province (the largest geographical division in Sierra Leone), the President said he was well aware that he is the President of all Sierra Leoneans, no matter their political affiliations and background, but he is also very much aware that he came from somewhere.

At the end of Sierra Leone’s 10-year war many initiatives sprouted to deal with the causes of the war which had manifested into one of Africa’s most gory and brutal civil conflicts. The TRC was established to uncover the truth about the causes of the war, why the war took the dimension it took and proffer recommendations that should serve as deterrent to future violent conflicts. Various national projects are being implemented in the justice sector including transformation of the police, review of laws and the Justice Sector Development Program (JSDP).

The Blame Game....Is President Ernest Koroma a Victim?
POLITICS

Ernest Koroma is blamed it seems for everything under the sun.  While I appreciate that many of his actions (or inactions) has resulted in ‘U-turns’ and policy compromises – one has at some stage got to balance this by pointing out what is probably not his fault. For example, fuel costs are too high so everyone blames the president.  To my knowledge, the president has no say in the cost of a barrel of crude oil so when it jumps from $80.00 to $140.00 in a matter of months, how can we lay the blame for this at his door?

Senator Barack Obama....The First African American Presidential Nominee
The perennial nemesis of the Democratic Party has resurfaced again with one of the candidates for the leadership of the party failing to yield to the rules of the game.  As a result, the malady of divisiveness appears ready to tear the Democrats apart, opening the door for a potential Republican victory in November.

2012 Will Be the Main Event In The Political Landscape of Sierra Leone

If the political battle lines which had been drawn before the 2007 general and Presidential elections seemed a little blurred, the looming competitive and intense rivalry between the three main political parties will definitely cement whatever perceived distinctions that exist between them. All of the above activities have been manifested in barely eight months following the conclusion of the last elections.  The political landscape that currently exists in the country is characterized by both inter and intra party feud, rivalry, incredible accusations, power struggle and voodoo “(Juju) politics

Indeed, political issues are those in which even the mediocre, hoodlums and proletariats classify themselves to be technocrats and experts.  There idea might be considered to be myopic but carries with it a reasonable amount of justification.  This is because all and sundry is stakeholders in every political discourse and as such, could not be easily knocked off in any gathering that preaches the advancement of humanity.  The point that is being hammered home is that politicizing presupposes the convergence of the membership or inhabitants of a place to make a decision.

Solomon Berewa....Was he Vindictive?
The former SLPP Leader /Vice President Solomon Berewa literally had real political visibility thrust upon him by Alhaji Ahmad Tejan Kabbah when he initially appointed him as his Attorney General and Minister of Justice.By all evaluative criteria Solomon Berewa did an excellent job as Attorney General and for that, this author offered him,his felicitations for a job well done as a technocrat/politician.He was later selected by Alhaji Kabbah to be his 2002 Presidential running mate because he was really impressed with his intellect and propensity for hard work.  Solo B seemed to be loyal, but Alhaji Kabbah failed to pay close attention to Solo B’s leadership style and human relations skills.Various political analysts have indicated that this unintended negligence by Alhaji Kabbah, the god father created the environment for the dismal failure of the SLPP in the 2007 Parliamentary and Presidential elections.
