OPINION > Something To Think About
Posted by Joe Sawan on Aug 29, 2008, 11:40
While the President of any country can proactively engage in activities that will please the citizens, there is, also, the very real possibility of the same President to either do or say things that would have the unintended effect of making people angry.  With the flurry of activities that Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma has been engaged in, His Excellency the President is perceived to have accomplished both of the possibilities indicated above.

Once again, Professor Kelfala Kallon has responded to my last essay, “Joe Sawan in Professor Kelfala Kallon’s Political History class”.  Fortunately for me, Professor Kallon treated my essay in a much kinder way not “flunking” me.  He must have been in a “jolly good mood”.  Thank you very much Professor Kallon for your generosity.

Cocaine Plane from Venezuela.....not in safe custody
To the Economist, the concept of market means a place where buyers and sellers meet for the purpose of transacting business. Anywhere can be described as a market as long buyers and sellers can meet and do business. In business transaction, one basic element that is required to be present is equilibrium, this is important as it gives satisfaction to both parties. Both parties can establish equilibrium and transact business of any nature

Sierra Leone Does not Need Cocaine From Venezuela

The Sierra Leonean reaction to the cocaine fiasco has been astounding. But for few negative commentaries, most Sierra Leoneans have responded patriotically. What setout to be a drug smuggling deal from Venezuela through Sierra Leone, has become a setup for national unity against illegal drugs and corruption. One fact that cannot be denied is that the territorial rights of Sierra Leone were violated

The African Union: Relevant or An International Laughing Stock:
OPINION > Something To Think About
Posted by Emmanuel Abalo on Jul 2, 2008, 18:47

In these days the African Union (AU) has been presented with a challenge and opportunity - the challenge of dealing forthrightly with the illegitimate government of someone who can be rightfully referred to as "former President Robert Mugabe", calling his game to an end and instead exploiting the opportunity to gain the credibility and relevance it so desires as a continental grouping towards a new course of democracy and development for Africa.

Finally, the “mother of all weddings” is allegedly scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 11, 2008 between the biggest catch, former President Alhaji Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah and Madam Isata Jabbie (IJ).  The innuendos and gossip surrounding the relationship between these two people should remain buried.  What is now important is their alleged decision to tie the marital knot.  Bravo “Nfa” and “IJ”.“IJ”, it is alleged has been patient, resilient, loyal and very supportive of the “Pa” since the early 1990s”

In Sierra Leone…His Name Attracts
OPINION > Something To Think About

There is absolutely very little difference between Sierra Leoneans and other nationalities regarding their perception of the significance of names in the status of families in a society.  It is not uncommon for families of lesser means and / or others who crave the limelight to name their offspring after well-established families.

For example, in the United States of America, personalities like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Jackson, Thomas Jefferson, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie

His Excellency President Ernest Bai Koroma’s persistent clarion call for attitudinal change in a bid to lift this nation from the abyss of moral decadence to an enviable standard of moral attitude, economic prosperity and social progress is indeed timely and a positive step in the right direction

“What Goes Around, Comes Around” Mister Information Minister
OPINION > Something To Think About

The Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) was unexpectedly shown the state House exit door in September, 2007 or the doors of the Presidential Lodge with a note that reads something like, NEVER RETURN UNTIL YOU ARE READY TO BE A UNIFIED POLITICAL PARTY”.  Since the world famous Kailahun Court Barray reluctantly accepted that verdict and indictment, some interesting things have started happening as proclaimed by the government spokesman and Minister of Information and Communications, Alhaji I.B. Kargbo who is usually calm and not prone to displaying his real emotions.

Sword of Damocles Hangs Over Poor Teachers in Sierra Leone

The Minister of Education in Sierra Leone Dr. Minkailu Bah, threatens to ‘weed out’ untrained teachers in primary and secondary schools in the war bruised, fatigue West African country. The expression “weed out” contextually conotates negativism. Education is necessary, as it is the life blood of any dynamic and progressive society. Investment in education is essential for socio-economic and political posterity. The poor, untrained and neglected teachers have made priceless sacrifice, helping to nurture and educate our less privileged children

The Golden Team that was Denied the Main Bowl

To start with, this writer wishes to express his profound and grateful thanks to Mr. Joseph Bandabla Dauda, the veteran politician for the insightful analysis he made about what he perceived to be the challenges that are confronting the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP).  According to Mr. J.B. Dauda, the current lack of party unity and organizational cohesion, the deliberate mistreatment of key party members who are now aggrieved and opportunistic divisiveness emanating from the 2005 party national convention in Makeni constitute the core of the SLPP challenges.
