CMS Grammar School was founded 1845 in Freetown embraced Sierra Leoneans from east to west..north to south
That this country, called Sierra Leone has a very rich socio-cultural heritage is absolutely indisputable.  Sierra Leoneans are not generally known to be warlike.  As a matter of fact, they are a tolerant and accommodating people.  Even Bai Bureh’s “Hut Tax” war, which was the equivalent of the American “Boston Tea Party” and Thomas Paine’s famous assertion of “no taxation without representation stance and almost all of the internal conflicts  that have afflicted the country

Despite the growing volume of literature on the subject of poverty, there continues to be no consensus on the definition of the phenomenon. Nor is there even an agreement on whether poverty is an economic concept or a social concept. Poverty as an economic concept uses monetary measures to measure well being of individuals.

Like in the life of an individual, there is always a time for decision making for every nation. For the sovereign state of Sierra Leone, there is no doubt that the time for a collective and pragmatic decision making has come.

Going for Inspector General Acha’s Jugular...Tribalism or 'SLPPism'?
STANDARD VOICE

For the past two weeks the airwaves including bars, markets, ‘potes’, offices and all, have been inundated with the news about the arrest and mysterious disappearance of Private Abdul Sesay, who stands accused of stealing arms and ammunition from the Lungi Garrison. He was under investigation when he escaped from police custody at Jui.Owing to this escape a lot of anxieties and fears surfaced leaving the people of Sierra Leone guessing the direction the operations of one of our state institutions-the Police-is taking. We at Standard Times are not taken aback by the expression of fear on the part of the people. Sierra Leone is a nation that is still grappling with the scars left behind by a brutal and crippling war. So their sense of security is always called upon when similar incidents that ignited the war machinery in this country threaten to rear their hydra heads again.Quite apart from this odious chapter of the war, recent history has been marked by several escapes of mostly hard core criminals from police custody including also from other state security personnel.

Stealing from the people with impunity
STANDARD VOICE

The report of the Auditor General’s audit of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, one of the most vital ministries in the country, has once again highlighted the level of impunity with which officials of state squander state funds. The manner in which the monies are eaten indicates clearly that these officials in whom the people have placed so much trust in are determined only to line their pockets, and care less for the welfare or wellbeing of the majority of the people of this country.

EDITORIAL:Resisting political pressure

When the 28th of July was announced by His Excellency President Alhaji Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah as the date on which presidential and parliamentary elections 2007 would be held we the Standard Times figured that something must be fundamentally wrong.Like many Sierra Leoneans, we were strongly of the view that the most appropriate person to have made that all important announcement should have been the Chief Electoral Commissioner.

The United Nations and Sierra Leone
STANDARD VOICE

The United Nations Organization and Sierra Leone have always been good bedfellows, beginning from the very early days of its membership as a newly independent country in 1961. The organization played a crucial role in the achievement of independence in the country and its subsequent recognition by other countries as a member of the community of civilized nations.
