China Town Guest House is Destroying Lumley-Aberdeen Beach Environment
Posted by Ishmael Kindama Dumbuya on Oct 17, 2009, 19:25

Standard Times Tourism Development Writer Kindama Dumbuya At Lumley Beach Looking At Debris

If the government of Sierra Leone through the Ministry of Lands Country Planning and the Environment in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs did not take urgent measures to control the activities of the China Town Guest House Located at the Lumley Beach Road, the environment in that end will be totally spoiled and will give great hiccups to potential tourists wishing to come into the country especially when that part is a viable and potential attraction area for tourists.

What is presently happening at the China Town vicinity is totally unacceptable to any environment loving individual. The trees and coconut trees planted opposite the guest house has all been destroyed by vehicles coming into the guest house in a daily basis. It could be recalled that after the Ministry of Tourism demolished business centers and kiosks in a way to create a good looking vicinity and environment friendly, the same Ministry in collaboration with the Ministry of Lands, Country Planning and the Environment planted coconut trees around the Lumley-Aberdeen beaches.

The main purpose of planting these coconut trees along the beaches is to beautify the environment and make it attractive to the incoming tourists. It is expected that after these trees have been grown up very well, apart from beautifying the environment, the trees will help greatly into the respiration of air in the atmosphere.

Very recently, undertook a task of walking along the beaches in a way to see how business operators along those beaches are handling the environment and whether they are contributing to the development of the environment. From a long distance feet walk along the beaches, one thing that greatly disturbs this environment advocate is the activities of the China Town. I sat at the perimeters of the guest house for a period of about 1hour 30 minutes. I saw vehicles of the guest house and also those of their customers parking on top of the young coconut trees in the beach.

There are more than thirty coconut trees I counted that have been destroyed by vehicles coming to the guest house. The trees are lying down with no prospect of leaving again. The only way trees can able to grow at the area again is for the Ministries to plant another coconut trees opposite the China Town guest house.

Interestingly, almost all the coconut trees along the beach are alright and are growing stealthily but only the ones at the China Town guest house has been destroyed by customers of the guest house and the staff of the guest house. At the Freetown Golf Club, I admired the trees planted at the field. There are well nurtured and barbed flowers in the golf center and most importantly, the cool breeze is there is welcome anyone coming into the Freetown Golf Club. T

The Freetown Gold Club is perhaps going to serve as the main tourist’s attraction site in the country because of its good environmental structure and atmospheric conditions. The site is so large that anyone that visits there will absolutely love to even stay in there.

This is exactly how the beaches should have look like when anyone passes through there, the person should admire greatly. But this is not so and some individuals are desperately destroying the beaches such as the China Town guest house.

This writer holds the view that the main purpose of the Ministry of Tourism demolished structures along the beaches earlier this year is to give the monopoly to the Chinese investors operating most of the guest houses and restaurants along the Lumley-Aberdeen beaches. This is because they wanted them to gain sales through their operatives in the beaches and by driving the small business people operating in with kiosks will create more sales for them.

This writer is calling on the Ministries of Tourism and Lands Country Planning and the Environment through the dedicated and no nonsense Minister, Dr. Sandy to take proper measures in addressing such menace presently carried by the China Town guest house against the environment.

These people should bear the responsibilities of destroying planted to beautify the environment and the beaches by financial punishment and also re-planting the coconut trees or if they failed, they should be totally removed from that part of the environment as is only an environment loving individual should operate a business at the beach.
