50/50 Group In Sierra Leone To Organise Fundraising Tree-Planting Event

The 50/50 Group, Sierra Leone will hold a Fundraising Tree-Planting Event on Thursday 5th November at 3.00 pm at the 50/50 Land site, near Jesus is Lord Ministry, Tower Hill, to urge all to love trees as well as Celebrate Women in Sierra Leone. The event will be launched by His Excellency the President: Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma and the Keynote Address will be given by Chief Justice Hawa Umu Tejan-Jalloh.

In continuation of its aim to support women to be equal and active participants in elective political leadership and decision-making positions, the 50/50 Group of Sierra Leone (a non partisan campaign for more women in politics and public life through training and advocacy)  will be organising a fundraising Tree-Planting event to celebrate Women in Sierra Leone, on Thursday 5 November 2009  at 3 p.m. at the  Land site of the fifty- fifty Group of Sierra Leone, next to Jesus is Lord Ministries, Rokel Street, Tower Hill, Freetown.

               

The purpose of the event is:

·        To encourage all to love Trees and protect our environment

·        To launch the 50/50-cum-Michael Schulenberg Competition – A   Tree is    my friend for students and pupils in Schools and Colleges.

·        To launch the Directory of Professional Women in Sierra Leone

·        To provide an opportunity for all categories of stakeholders operating in Sierra Leone to celebrate the contributions of women in the advancement of their respective mandates.

·        To ask women and supportive men to plant trees in honour of women in Parliament, Local Councils and Public life as well as women in their lives and make a donation.

·        To commemorate the 50/50 Group of Sierra Leone’s leading advocacy role in promoting women’s rights in Sierra Leone.

You will watch a skit performed by members of the Female Parliamentary Caucus and also receive a souvenir ‘‘The 50/50 Brochure”, featuring:

·        aspects of the work of the 50/50 Group since its establishment

·        prominent women in various institutions in Sierra Leone

·        how institutions contribute to the promotion of women, and women’s rights in our environment.  

The funds raised will contribute towards the building of the 50/50 Group’s headquarters and Women’s Leadership Training Institute on a piece of land that was given to the Group by the Sierra Leone Government in recognition of their work.

The acquisition of funds for the development of the building will not only enhance the sustainability of the organization at different levels but will also symbolically represent the indomitable spirit of the women’s movement in Sierra Leone. Having a permanent structure of their own will reduce the threat of being vulnerable to funding gaps of in the future. The leadership institute will:

·        facilitate the training of more women in Sierra Leone and eventually in the West African region.

·        help the group to effectively achieve their vision and create an image of permanence in the psyche of the nation in relation to their unending fight for women’s right to participate  in politics and public life at all levels and to ensure gender parity
