PRESS RELEASE

The Sierra Leone Reporters Union (SLRU) views with regret the deplorable environment under which reporters are working in the country.

It is disheartening to note that some media institutions, both print and electronics, are paying their reporters less than the minimum wage.

SLRU wants it to be known that from investigations conducted; these reporters have no social security. And out of the over fifty (50) newspapers and radio stations operating in the country, only seventeen are registered with NASSIT of which four are honoring their obligations.

The Union also learnt that most of these reporters use their ID cards as trump cards to pay themselves, practice which besmear the image of the profession. The union therefore views such activities as total embarrassment, and condemns the unprofessional conduct of those posing as media practioners in the country.

SLRU wishes it to be known that together with the Sierra Leone Labour Congress a process of securing a bargaining certificate from the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security, is on course, and which the union will use to dialogue with the various media houses to improve the welfare of reporters.

The SLRU has also embarked on a nationwide survey to determine how many reporters are in the country. It could be recalled that the SLRU wrote letters to all publishers and station managers requesting a detailed report of their reporters, who are registered with NASSIT and on a payroll.

Regrettably managers are yet to respond.

We however appeals that our appeal is adhere to as that will help us know practicing journalists so that those that may pose a threat to the profession be brought to book.

SLRU therefore calls on SLAJ to prevail on the management of the prints and electronics media to address our concerns.

Signed:

Abubakarr Jalloh

Secretary-General
