Sierra Leoneans In Winnipeg Celebrate New Years Eve In Style

Sierra Leoneans across Canada celebrated New Years Eve and ushered in the new 2008 in grand style; some in the midst of prayers renewing their ties with the good lord for a prosperous 2008, others partying with merriment, pomp and pageantry.

In the Prairie Provinces of Alberta and Manitoba it was all night long carnival with people gyrating to the latest beats from Sierra Leone but it was not the same for Sierra Leoneans in the Atlantic provinces of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia where 25 to 30 inches of snowfall spoiled the party mood keeping people indoors celebrating with family.

In downtown Winnipeg at the City Oasis ballroom where the Sierra Leone Nationals Association of Manitoba (SALNAM) had their New Years gig it was merriment to the first degree with disc jockeys in the house Brian Cleveland and ADK alias DJ Main Bowl dropping non-stop beats making the crowd go bananas.

The count down to the New Year 2008 was done by master of ceremony Tha Marie Sesay. With the clock ticking to 12:00am prayers for love and unity to prevail among Sierra Leoneans were offered by Elizabeth Joko Jones and Sheik Mohamed Kamara. At 12:00am January 1st 2008 the traditional “hapi nu year” song drowned the dance hall with people hugging and congratulating each other.

For the hundreds of Sierra Leoneans and non Sierra Leoneans who braved the cold and chilly weather to celebrate with SALNAM the event was a smack down. With plenty sumptuous food to eat and plenty to drink the attendees not only had words of praises for SALNAM executive for putting up one of the best shows but went home satisfied that they have enjoyed their money's worth.

In Edmonton at Bacon Heights Community Centre it was all smiles for members of the Leone Stars as hundreds of Sierra Leoneans braved the cold and chilly weather to support their New Year’s Eve fundraising social. According to the master of ceremony Daniel Oldfield the dancehall was jam-packed and as usual DJ Ivan Jackson was at his best dropping the beats. “Proceeds from the fundraising will go towards the purchase of sporting gears for the Leone Stars of Edmonton” he said.
