Gas Explosion In The Heart Of Freetown.....15 Dead Over 14 in Critical Condition

Over 15 people have been confirmed dead and 14 more in critical condition after series of gas explosions rocked the central business district of Freetown in the afternoon hours today Thursday December 20 2007.

Reports say butane tanks stored at a merchandise shop owned by a Lebanese merchant in Free Street exploded sending fragments and debris in the area.

 

Passer bys and Christmas shoppers were caught unawares by the exploding fragments which left dead bodies scattered all over the street eyewitness account say.Among the dead bodies were people of Lebanese origin and school children.

 

As at press time Vice President Sam Sumana is reported to have visited and consoled the injured victims at the Connaught Hospital in Freetown. We will bring our readers updates on this tragedy that has dampened the Christmas mood in Freetown.
